Can Gerbils Eat Mealworms? How Many and How Often

Yes, gerbils can eat mealworms. They are a popular protein treat, and gerbils are omnivores that eat seeds and insects in the wild. Treat mealworms as a snack, not a meal: a few once or twice a week is plenty.

Live vs. dried mealworms

  • Dried: Easy to store, no escape risk, and fine for most owners. Pick plain, unflavored dried mealworms.
  • Live: Many gerbils love chasing them and it provides enrichment. Buy from a pet store or reputable supplier, keep them in a cool container, and offer only a few at a time so none burrow into bedding.

Avoid wild-caught insects, which can carry parasites or pesticides.

How many?

For one adult gerbil, think “a few,” not a handful, and no more than once or twice a week. Mealworms are high in fat and protein, so too many can lead to weight gain. The UK charity PDSA lists mealworms among healthy treats but warns that too many treats cause weight gain.

Tips

  • Scatter mealworms in the bedding so your gerbil has to forage.
  • Hand-feed one or two to build trust.
  • Remove uneaten live worms the next day.
  • Do not replace the staple food with insects. The base of the diet should be a quality pellet or gerbil mix plus small amounts of fresh vegetables.

Bottom Line

Mealworms are a safe, enjoyable treat in small amounts. Keep them to a few a week, and ask your vet if your gerbil is gaining weight or ignoring its regular food.
