Mediterranean Gecko Diet

Mediterranean house geckos (Hemidactylus turcicus) are insect eaters. Feed them gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches and other small feeder insects, dusted with calcium. They do not need fruit or vegetables.

What to feed

  • Staples: crickets, dubia roaches and small mealworms or black soldier fly larvae.
  • Treats: waxworms and silkworms, in moderation because waxworms are fatty.
  • Size: insects should be no longer than the space between the gecko’s eyes.

Buy feeder insects from a reputable supplier. Insects caught outdoors can carry pesticides or parasites, so they are not a safe choice for a pet.

How often to feed

  • Juveniles: daily, as many insects as they eat in about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Adults: two to three times a week.

Remove uneaten crickets, since they can stress or bite a gecko resting at night. These geckos are mostly active at night, so feed in the evening.

Supplements and gut-loading

  1. Gut-load feeder insects for at least 12 to 24 hours with nutritious greens, vegetables or a commercial gut-load diet.
  2. Dust with calcium (without D3 if you use UVB lighting or very often, with D3 if you do not) at most feedings.
  3. Add a reptile multivitamin once or twice a month.

Follow the directions on your chosen supplements, and ask a reptile vet if you are unsure.

Water

Mist the enclosure lightly each evening. Geckos usually lick droplets from leaves or the walls, and a shallow water dish is a good backup.

Housing basics

Provide hides and vertical climbing surfaces. Daytime temperatures in the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit with a slightly cooler night, and moderate humidity, work well. Check a reptile care sheet for details. A thermometer and hygrometer help you keep conditions stable.

Bottom Line

Offer varied, gut-loaded insects, dusted with calcium, in the evening, and keep fresh water available. For similar species, see our guides to the marbled gecko diet, house gecko diet and common house gecko food.
