Midwestern Pet Foods, located in Evansville, Indiana, produces 12 distinct brands of pet foods for animals. These include Earthborn Holistic, Venture and Sportmix Wholesomes.
On Tuesday, the FDA issued a warning letter to Midwestern after inspecting its manufacturing plants and finding evidence of violations. These offenses violate regulations designed to keep pet food secure.

Earthborn Holistic
Midwestern Pet Foods, the company behind Earthborn Holistic and other lines of dog foods, is a fourth generation family-owned business with three manufacturing facilities located in Illinois, Oklahoma and New York. Its dry food and treats are produced there while its moist foods are manufactured overseas in Thailand.
They strive to produce high-quality dog foods free from harmful ingredients and offer a satisfaction guarantee. Their recipes utilize only premium proteins and nutritious components designed to promote overall wellness and boost immunity.
This line offers five formulas: Adult Vantage, Ocean Fusion, Puppy Vantage, Small Breed and Primitive Natural. Each recipe is specially formulated with proteins, fruits, vegetables and vitamins designed to boost your dog’s immunity and overall wellbeing.
This unrefined kibble offers four protein choices, such as duck meal, smoked turkey and salmon. Plus it includes an array of superfoods like flaxseed, cranberries, blueberries, broccoli and carrots which contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds to aid in digestion, promote skin and coat health and lower blood pressure in dogs.
Sportmix Wholesomes
Wholesomes Sensitive Skin & Stomach formulas are ideal for dogs with allergies or sensitive stomachs, as they eliminate refined grains and legumes which may cause skin irritation or upset stomachs.
This diet is high in protein and nutritious carbs such as peas, potatoes, rice and chickpeas. These complex carbohydrates help sustain energy levels while providing dogs with essential nutrients to grow.
Menhaden fish meal, rich in omega-3 fatty acids for heart and immune health, is also added. Plus it’s fortified with L-carnitine and Antarctic krill meal to meet active dogs’ nutritional requirements.
The FDA recently recalled certain lots of Sportmix dry dog food produced at Midwestern Pet Foods’ Monmouth, Illinois facility. This recalled product had been distributed both nationwide and online.
Sportmix Ultimates
Sportmix Ultimates is an ideal choice for dogs that require a high energy diet. This formula contains menhaden meal and flaxseed, providing essential vitamins and nutrients like Omega 3 fatty acids.
This dry dog food can be fed to both puppies and adult dogs alike. The kibble size of this particular meal is slightly smaller than most other brands, making it perfect for pups with larger muzzles.
This dog food contains chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), which provides essential fatty acids and helps older dogs maintain their weight. The remaining portion is composed of meat and fish for protein-packed muscles.
In December 2020, Midwestern Pet Foods recalled several lots of its Sportmix pet foods after testing revealed levels of aflatoxin that exceeded the FDA’s safe limit. As a result, at least 130 pets died and 220 others became ill.
CanineX
Midwestern Pet Foods manufactures CanineX dry dog food products as well as Earthborn Holistic and Propac Ultimates brands.
This brand caters to active dogs with formulas that are high in both protein and fat, since working or competing dogs need both for their energy-consuming activities.
CanineX offers two grain-free performance diets designed to maximize energy, muscle mass and immune support. Plus, these foods are packed with omega fatty acids, glucosamine plus chondroitin for joint health benefits.
This dog food’s first two ingredients are Chicken By-Product Meal and Ground Yellow Corn, a carbohydrate which some dogs are allergic to or have difficulty digesting.
